In school we have teachers to teach us about a particular subject/lesson when we are new to it.
In colleges, we have professors who do the same.
In the workplace, employees who clear the interview are trained to take up tasks in a particular field of technology. They will be allotted to particular projects to take up tasks related to the technology.
Every project has a specific manner in which the tasks are carried out. For example, in layman terms: If the technology is ‘Dal Cooking’: one individual may want the dal to be cooked raw and simply season it with salt; whereas another may like the dal to be pressure cooked along with the masala and seasoning done beforehand.
So, the same dal may need to be cooked in different manners to suit the tastes of different individuals.
That is exactly what a KT- Knowledge transition is.
It may be taught directly by the maikin of the house; the client.
It may be taught by the existing cooks who are leaving; the existing employees in the project who intend to move out.
There is a specific procedure to be followed in each project which needs to be learnt thoroughly before starting work., the task of meting it out to the newcomers is called Knowledge transition-KT.
Project knowledge Transfer (KT) is very important process in an project but somehow, we do not give enough importance to the same. An effective project KT is the foundation of successful project execution. Today in this short blog, I would like to provide few guidelines which might be useful while arranging project KT.

KT stands for knowledge transfer in IT world, Usually new joinees and Fresher employees to the team will be undergoing Induction training followed by KT sessions.
What is a KT in IT companies?
In engineering KT means “Keeping Terms”. In simpler terms, it is supplementary exams.
Eg. You gave 6 exams and one exam you couldn’t clear,then that subject will be consider as KT,which you need to clear in next sem/next to next sem.
In IT world, KT is “Knowledge Transfer”. When you get a project or you replace another person at office, you will get some knowledge about the project.
In Indian IT company terminology, KT stands for Knowledge Transfer.
It is usually done when some information is passed on from one person/team to another.
Examples:
KT expands to Knowledge Transfer. This KT is generally given to new joinees/freshers by senior geeks to help the fresher/new joinee to know about the work, technology etc.
Rather than saying knowledge transfer, I would say knowledge sharing, since the senior guys share their experience and does a lot of backend word to put the session good, so that the listener is clear about things.
KT’s are conducted even when a position has resigned his/her job by the resignee to the upcoming person.
All answers are perfect ! But in IT Services Companies the literal meaning of KT is KILLING TIME and suppose it is happening to downgrade your talent (e.g your love coding but they are pushing you into testing) then it’s meaning is KILLING TALENT.

KT is a short-form of Knowledge Transfer.
KT is an activity which is probably the most planned activity which happens in an IT company but unfortunately, when it comes to its implementation it is the worst.
There can be multiple phases in a project when the project managers plan for KT but I am going to focus on the part when one of the team members is leaving the project and there is a new one coming in to replace.
Giver
There is a provider who is leaving the project or the company and is in most cases least interested in the success or failure of the project once he is out. I will go so far as to say that the person has been harassed to the point that in his mind there was no other option than to leave the project or the company. This may not be true in all cases, but from the provider’s point of view, it is most of the time. This person just wants to get over with the whole process so that he can enjoy the honeymoon period in the project with one leg over the other.
Taker
And like any coin, there is another side to it. The other side is the receiver. The receiver in most of the cases is a newbie to the company so has a great weight on his shoulders to prove his worth. On the outside, the receiver may be the most confident guy you would ever see. But on the inside, he is scared to shit, based on his own experience as a Giver of KT in his previous organization. He remembers all the topics which he skimmed through in 10 mins when he was on the other side of the KT table. He knows the quality of the KT isn’t great but he doesn’t have much choice.

Knowledge about project,code flow,work involved etc is transferred from an experience guy to a novice who recently joined the project till he becomes comfortable handling the project by himself.
It can be an official KT phase or through documents or you learn while you work.
